Biomaterials
As we enter the 21st century, the mystery of the human body has been revealed through the development of life science, as the understanding and interest in the interaction between materials and the human body is deepening. Corresponding to this, research of biomaterials which can perceive information of human body’s cell, DNA, RNA, etc. and correspond to that information is being carried out actively. The biomaterials field which currently belongs in Interdisciplinary Program of Bioengineering of Seoul National University is carrying out research and development of devices that can satisfy the required properties and functions in the body according to the region and term it is used, through metal, ceramic, polymer and composite material that is biocompatible with low toxicity and has guaranteed biostability. In addition to improving the properties, intensity, surface characteristics, etc., it is pursuing to maximize the efficiency of diagnosing and treating human diseases and have an intense understanding of organisms by realizing biomaterials in nano level(nano particle, nano tubes, nano fibers, etc.). Also development of customized biomaterials appropriate for applied fields such as dental materials, tissue engineering and the applied research of biomaterials as drug delivery systems to enhance bioavailability of drugs are in progress. The field of biomaterials in Interdisciplinary Program of Bioengineering which makes horizontal information and knowledge exchange through joint research of clinical medicine, basic science and engineering science, is emerging as the center of combined research that the present age demands.
